About 15 years ago, I was studying to be a doctor. I think pediatrics was my goal. (Looking back now I think I’d make a better surgeon.) The summer after my sophomore year at Truman State University I came home feeling more uncertain than I ever had in my life. Classes weren’t going well. I was looking at 2 more years of college, then medical school. I was 20 and not sure I could hack that much more school. A few weeks later, I got my report card and there it was….a big fat “D” in Genetics. The one and only “D” I ever got.
That was my tipping point. Uncertain no more. I decided to change majors. I was good at math. Truman had a good accounting program. So here I am.
I’ve been writing on this blog for about 2 years now. Up until today (May 12, 2011) I wrote about generic stuff to do with accounting and tax. The kinds of articles you might read on CNN/Money or Yahoo! during tax season.
No more. That stuff is boring. I went back and deleted all my old posts. There really wasn’t anything I was extremely proud of anyway.
It’s funny, I got into accounting because I was a numbers guy. But 15+ years after making a decision that would shape the rest of my life, I finally realize that this business (and most others I would venture to guess) is about relationships. Numbers are important of course, but there is so much more.
One of my favorite things about being a CPA is being able to sit down one to one with a customer and talk about what is going on with their business. If something is going right, let’s figure out a way to do more. If something is going wrong, we can brainstorm possible solutions. That’s the stuff I want to talk about here.
I believe small businesses and entrepreneurs are the engine of our economy. My goal as a CPA is to help them achieve their goals and continue doing awesome work. I accomplish that by various means – accounting, bookkeeping, tax and much more – so the entrepreneurs can do what they do best! I believe the world is a better place when people do what they love. I will do whatever I can to help small business owners (or wanna be small business owners) do that successfully.
Oh yeah, I earned my CPA license in 2004. Woohoo! Go here to see proof!
